Now, 26 percent FDI is allowed in digital media.
The government has made an announcement about FDI in digital media. The main purpose of the government is to create a self-reliant and accountable digital news media ecosystem and through this the government will also crack down on Chinese digital media. So the government has decided to allow 26 percent foreign investment in digital media. For this, the permission of the government will be required. It will also be applicable to those who stream news or upload news and current affairs on their websites, apps or any other platforms.
These have the advantages that regular oversight can be made. The CEO should be an Indian citizen. Security clearance is necessary for foreigners. Till date all these scales were in only broadcast media but now they will also be applicable in digital media.
It is supposed that it will control Chinese and other foreign digital media. In India there are many digital news platforms like Daily Hunt, Opera News, UC news, News Dog, etc. are digital media with Chinese or foreign control. They can hurt India's interests and influence elections. True FDI investments that are not adverse to Indian interests will be approved. The condition of appointing a CEO as an Indian person will not hurt Indian interests.
All Indian digital media companies will get a level playing field. On behalf of PIB, journalists working in digital media are being given all the facilities that journalists of other media get.
Indian interests will get priority. Low-cost data and Internet is being used very much. There is a actual danger of fake news and information warfare, especially from the neighboring countries. For example now a days it is being accused of influencing elections in America. On the behalf of current scenario, such types of policy decisions will help in removing such threats.
